The origin of Nabakoti Khandua — Odisha's most sacred silk

The Khandua silk is not simply one of Odisha's most celebrated handloom traditions. It is the fabric of the divine.

For centuries the Khandua pata has been woven specifically for Lord Jagannath — the presiding deity of the sacred Puri Jagannath temple, one of the four dhams of Hindu pilgrimage. The Khandua silk is the fabric offered to the deity — draped on the idol of Lord Jagannath during religious ceremonies, prepared by weavers in a tradition of devotion that has continued without interruption for hundreds of years. To wear a Khandua saree is, in the deepest sense of the phrase, to wear something sacred.

The word Nabakoti refers to the nine crore — ninety million — names of Lord Vishnu that are woven as inscriptions directly into the pallu of the saree. The Odishan script visible in the pallu medallions of this saree are those sacred names — not printed, not embroidered, but woven into the silk itself on the loom, thread by thread. This is not decoration. This is devotion expressed through craft at the highest level of its mastery.

The Khandua technique is a double ikat process — both the warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving, with the pattern created entirely through the precision of thread placement rather than any post-weave application. It is among the most technically demanding weaving processes in India — and one of the most ancient. The characteristic soft-edged bleeding quality of the ikat motifs is not imprecision. It is the physical evidence of hand-dyed threads meeting the loom — a quality that no machine process can replicate and that every serious handloom collector recognises immediately.

For the handloom lover and the serious collector

This saree is for the woman who knows what Nabakoti means. For the collector who understands that a double ikat process on 4-ply mulberry silk with sacred inscriptions woven into the pallu is not merely a beautiful garment — it is a living artefact of Indian civilisation. For the woman of faith who wants to wear the fabric of Lord Jagannath's temple offering at her most important ceremonies. For the bride whose trousseau must include something genuinely sacred and irreplaceable. For the handloom lover who has spent years searching for a Khandua worthy of her collection.

This is that saree. Ready to dispatch. Ready to be worn.

Perfect for

Odishan weddings and bridal ceremonies · Religious functions and temple visits · Puri Jagannath temple visits and pilgrimages · Griha Pravesh and housewarming functions · Engagement and reception parties · Baby shower and naming ceremonies · Anniversary celebrations — especially significant ones · Gifting for brides, mothers, and serious handloom collectors · Indian diaspora weddings and religious ceremonies worldwide · Museum-quality handloom and ikat saree collections · Diwali, Navratri, and major festival celebrations · Cultural programmes and classical events

Styling note

The emerald green and black combination is one of the most dramatic and photogenic in Indian ethnic wear — it photographs with extraordinary richness in both natural and artificial light. For Odishan weddings and religious occasions, pair with traditional silver filigree jewellery from Cuttack — the Tarakasi tradition is the natural and historically rooted companion of Khandua silk. For bridal and reception occasions, antique gold jewellery against the green body creates a deeply auspicious and visually stunning combination. For cultural and classical events, a minimal gold chain and traditional earrings allow the Nabakoti pallu inscriptions and ikat motifs to carry the full visual statement without competition.

This saree as a wedding or religious gift

A Nabakoti Khandua 4-ply mulberry silk saree is among the most extraordinary and meaningful gifts in Indian culture — a sacred textile with centuries of devotional heritage, woven with the names of Lord Vishnu in its pallu, and presented in the vibrant emerald green that is among the most auspicious colours in Hindu tradition. For a bride at her wedding, for a mother at a significant religious milestone, for a daughter receiving her most treasured saree, for a handloom collector adding a museum-quality piece to her collection, or for a family marking a pilgrimage to Puri — this is a gift that transcends occasion and enters the realm of the genuinely sacred.

Note: Photos are taken in natural daylight. Slight colour variation may occur due to screen brightness and display settings. As each Khandua saree is individually woven on traditional pit looms using the double ikat resist-dye process, the characteristic soft-edged bleeding quality of the ikat motifs and minor variations in motif placement are natural and deeply valued features of authentic handmade Khandua craft — each piece is genuinely unique and irreplaceable

What you see in our photos is exactly what you receive — no filters, no misleading edits, no surprises. We photograph every saree in natural daylight so you can judge the colour, fabric, and work accurately before you buy. We describe every detail honestly because we believe you deserve to make an informed choice, not a hopeful guess. Every order is quality-checked before dispatch. If something is ever not right, we are here — responsive, accountable, and committed to making it good.
